From Amazon.com Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet was unique in its day for casting kids in the play's pivotal roles of, well, kids. Seventeen-year-old Leonard Whiting and 15-year-old Olivia Hussey play the titular pair, the Bard's star-crossed lovers who defy a running feud between their families in order to be together in love. Typically played on stage and in previous film productions by adult actors, the innocent look and rawness of Whiting and Hussey resonated at the time with a burgeoning youth movement from San Francisco to Prague. The tragic romance at the center of the story also clicked with anti-authority sentiments, but even without that, Zeffirelli scores points by validating the ideals and passions of strong-willed adolescents. Less successful are scenes requiring the actors to have a fuller grasp of the text, though the best thing going remains the unambiguous duel between Romeo and Tybalt (Michael York). Lavishly photographed by Pasquale de Santis on location in Italy, this Romeo and Juliet brought a different tone and dimension to a story that had become tiresome in reverential presentations. --Tom Keogh

THE Romeo and Juliet November 27, 2007 Estrild (BC, Canada) This is one of my very most favorite films. They are the characters, no one else. It is perfect in every way. The costume, the acting, the sets, the casting, the music. I get thoroughy enthralled every time, and weep every time. I cannot say enough good things about this film. I am thoroughly in love with it. It's enchanting, enrapturing, rich and beautiful, honest, thrilling, inspiring, heartbreaking, eternal...
A dead on performance of Romeo & Juliet November 24, 2007 Frances L. Arsenault (Nanaimo, BC, Canada) I always love the works of Shakespeare, ever since I studied him in my High School English Classes; We were doing Romeo & Juliet in Grade 10, and we have watched this movie in class; and after that, I love this film of this beautiful play; I also would like to say that "Romeo & Juliet" is now one of my favorite plays from the immortal bard. The performances are dead on, especially Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey as the two lovers themselves, and also John McEnry's turn as Mercutio (he makes him look like a REAL Froot Loop); and there's also the wonderful soundtrack, and as I said it many, many times, if there is one thing I love in film, is a very good soundtrack.
WONDERFUL! February 26, 2006 Book N Movie Buff (Calgary, Alberta Canada) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I did see this movie when it was in the theatres! I'm as impressed with it now as then. It has a sexiness to it with the youngsters in the lead roles, and brings a passion to it that is intoxicating. Wonderful to look at, wonderfully engaging Shakespeare. Highly recommended.
Wonderful Teaching Tool January 26, 2006 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I saw this in class and thought it was great as a teaching tool. Except for a few parts my entire class was laughing and entertained which wasn't always what the film was going for but at least we all paid attention and were therefore active in the discussion after. My teacher skipped any of the nudity after the class before mine laughed too much but i think we would have been mature enough, it only lasts seconds, and i want to believe that most classes in high school are mature enough to pay attention to the dialogue and plot despite any laughs they may find. The picture was good and i found more of us following what was going on than in the new Romeo Juliet with Leo Decaprio and Claire Daine. Go with this one it's closer to the source material too. Good movie, great learning tool.
Breathtaking December 16, 2004 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I saw this movie in highschool and WOW this is one of the best movies ever made, for a 1968 film, the picture was clear, scenery was excellent and the actors fit the character traits perfectly, I mean Olivia Hussey as Juliet was the perfect match, the most good looking 15 year old i've ever seen. Great job on this movie.
