Amazon.com Essential Video
John Hughes's popular 1985 teen drama finds a diverse group of high school students--a jock (Emilio Estevez), a metalhead (Judd Nelson), a weirdo (Ally Sheedy), a princess (Molly Ringwald), and a nerd (Anthony Michael Hall)--sharing a Saturday in detention at their high school for one minor infraction or another. Over the course of a day, they talk through the social barriers that ordinarily keep them apart, and new alliances are born, though not without a lot of pain first. Hughes (Sixteen Candles), who wrote and directed, is heavy on dialogue but he also thoughtfully refreshes the look of the film every few minutes with different settings and original viewpoints on action. The movie deals with such fundamentals as the human tendency toward bias and hurting the weak, and because the characters are caught somewhere between childhood and adulthood, it's easy to get emotionally involved in hope for their redemption. Preteen and teenage kids love this film, incidentally. The DVD release includes production notes, cast and crew bios, widescreen presentation, Dolby sound, closed captioning, optional French and Spanish soundtracks, and optional Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars We Are All Diferent,Some More Than Others...   January 14, 2008
Tommy.M (Canada,New Brunswick)
In 1985 a movie named "The Breakfast Club" came out and i don't think anybody expected it would become the hit and have the impact it did. This movie changed the way teen movies were made and set a new standart for them.Even today those movies all owe a little something to this beloved movie. It adresse issues such as stereotypes and teenage anger. It also points out a very strong message and even if the movie is over 20 years old now,it doesn't matter it still is up to date as most of the things that happens still happens in High Schools. There are still nerds, basket cases, princesses, criminals and athletes in each schools and that is precisly what the 4 main characters are, different from the rest. The story is original and is still as good and funny as it was back when it was released.

4 teens are sent to the 8 hours Saturday detention at a Illinois High School in a fictionnal city, for different reasons.John Bender(Judd Nelson),the criminal is sent there because of the false fire alarm he pulled earlier in the week.Andrew Clark(Emilio Estevez),aka the sporto,is there because he tapped ahem, someone's buns togheter.Andrew Johnson(Anthony Michael Hall),the nerd is there because he was caught with that's right,a flair gun in his locker.princess Claire Standish(Molly Ringwald)is there because she skipped class to go shopping(what else?hehe).Allison Reynolds(Ally Sheedy),the weirdo is simply there because she has nothing better to do.Those teens don't have much,if any in common except they all have problems and they all belong to different groups.Of course there is a character that you will relate to more than others, and if you want to know wich one mine was it was probably John Bender as he was the entertaining one.

These 4 teens will troughout the course of the day, learn about each other and try to understand each other and even experiment with things.Paul Anderson as the mean Principal was really convincing and his role was appropriate for this film and there is also the Janitor who has a small role in the movie as well, outside of that there are a few kids's parents in it but that's about it as far as characters goes. The cast for the movie was pretty good with Judd Nelson and Emilio Estevez being the ones delivering the best performances in it.Most of the actors in the movie were also part of the brat pack movie that were famous in the 1980s but this was the first and possibly best one.Anyone who was a teen in the 80s has to have seen it,if not well...anyway you can still watch it now anyway.

This movie was defyning for the teen movies that followed it and its a great piece of pop culture used in many television shows(such as Family Guy,The Simpsons,Futurama and many other shows)and others. It even receved an award. The soundtrack was also famous for having the new wave band the Simple Minds's hit "Don't You Forget About Me" wich was aired quite often in the 80s.It is also to note that movie has a good length, doesn't have any scenes that are dragued too long and its captivating. The Director and Writter,John Hughes made some pretty good movies and some of the greatest teen movies ever and this one might be the crowning achievement of his career.Simply put, this is a must see movie and a classic one that nearly everyone can enjoy and i give the highest rating, symbol of excellence a well deseved five stars,I highly recommend The Breakfast club.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and artistic   January 7, 2008

"The Breakfast Club" is the story of five high school students(Emilio Eztevez's character of Andrew Clark,Molly Ringwald's character of Claire Standish,Anthony Michael Hall's character of Brian Johnson,Judd Nelson's character of John Bender, and Ally Sheedy's character of Allison Reynolds)stuck in detention for one entire day. Dissapointing and quiet, right?

Dissapointing--yes--quiet--wrong!!!!! The principal in charge of all five students,Richard Vernon(the late Paul Gleason--RIP)is nothing more than arrogant and stubborn. He won't let anything get in the way of the detention he is giving being harder than a bowling ball on one's foot. Add that together with all of the mischief that John Bender carries with him to the detention, and You've got more than just a long day.

"The Breakfast Club" may be a teen comedy/drama;yet,it is some of the best artistic work ever developed and pulled off. No doubt--without a question--"The Breakfast Club" has some of the most antic humor ever pulled off on camera. You'll laugh hard at a line of comedy you know was written in the script--You'll laugh harder at its execution by whichever actor delivers it.

What is it that really makes "The Breakfast Club" shine? On top of how well-written the comedy is,the drama is just as impeccable. Sure--its a trait that even "Happy Gilmore" didn't forget to touch up on. Yet,the remarkable part is how the drama maintains feels of darkness and seriousness all in one,not going overboard but making its intention, power, and prescence known. Don't expect anything Oscar worthy. Understand the concept for what it is,and from "The Breakfast Club",You'll find keen traits that are not only very hard to find--could have come close to not existing.

As you may have noticed, what you have here is a "special edition" of "The Breakfast Club"--a part of the High School Reunion Collection. The remastering is quite solid and adds to the enjoyment of the movie. It brings the 80's fashion and traits of "The Breakfast Club" to life so much to the point where the word nostalgia isn't crawling through your head. There are no real bonus feautures(unless you count the recommendations for a few other John Hughes films and the theatrical trailer for "The Breakfast Club"),though. The remastering is good enough to forget bonus feautures. However,if you are intent on bonus feautures coming along with "The Breakfast Club",you have come to the wrong place.

Overall,a memorable film that is enjoyable for all ages, and belongs in every film fan's collection.

5 out of 5 stars We're all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it, that's all.   October 25, 2007

Ah... the eighties - a simpler time. A time when James Cameron was the greatest Sci-fi director out there (he had not even begun his obsession with the Titanic). A time when bright, almost neon, colours and big hair were in. A time when Ferris Bueller had made cutting school into an art form and Judd Nelson was the coolest guy on the planet!

The Breakfast Club is not just another teenage movie, it is the teenage movie! (Even though the average age of the actors in the movie would have been about 25). I think you have to see it when you're a teenager to really appreciate it. Anyone who sees it when they are in their thirties or later, like Richard Vernon, (the teacher in charge of the unruly group of teenagers) has already forgotten what it was like to have raging hormones and bad hair.

You could argue that it is a movie by numbers, giving you all the elements and characters that teenagers can relate to. You have in the simplest terms and most convenient definitions a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, and a criminal. Everyone one of us can relate to one of these characters (personally, I was the basket case). You have snappy dialogue, a very uncool and intolerant authority figure, in the guise of Paul Gleason, demonstrating the generation gap perfectly. Lots of pretty people to satisfy those raging hormones. You also have all the major topics that teenagers are most concerned about discussing, losing your virginity, parental oppression, and school status to name but a few.

The Breakfast Club is a film that I will make sure that my children watch when they are teenagers, and hopefully they will appreciate it as much as I did. (My kids are going to hate me!)

5 out of 5 stars The Most Life Changing Movie Of My Life!   January 7, 2006

"Dear Mr. Vernon, we accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it is we did wrong, but we think you're crazy for making us write an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you want to see us, in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain, and an athlete, and a basketcase, a princess, and a criminal. Does that answer your question? Sincerely yours, The Breakfast Club."

That note changed my life forever. This is possibly the most important movie of my life. For the first time in my life, I saw a movie that describes all teenagers. You have the 'Rebel' (Who is incredibly played by Judd Nelson. The reason Judd Nelson is remebered in Hollywood.) The 'Rich Girl' (Played amazingly well by Molly Ringwald.) the 'Jock' (Emilio Estavez at his finest.) the 'Nerd' (Well played by Anthony Micheal Hall.) and the 'Basketcase' (Ally Sheedy's finest performance.) When I first saw this movie when I was 10, I only liked because I thaught it was hillarious. It was not untill I was 12 that I really conected to the charecters of this classic. If I was not the loser, depressed outcast I am, I would never have loved this movie so much. I connected with the charecters so well, it felt as if they were me sliced in half into seprate people. Judd Nelson plays the kind of person that is buried inside the soul of all the good kids in the world and a person that freakinly reminds me of myself. Molly Ringwald's charecter is like those pretty valley girls that you meet in life where you see glam and perfect on the outside but then you know that she has issues of somekind. Anthony Micheal Hall in the movie is a nerd who has a hard time fitting in. Ally Sheedy plays the 2nd greatest psychopath in the history of teen movies (Besides Christan Slater's charecter in Heathers.) and besides Judd Nelson's charecter, became one of the charecters I connected well with. Round that up with a classic soundtrack and an amazing screenplay writen by the god of teen movies. John Hughes, you get a pure classic that is a god teen movie to see, not that "Bring It On", "Without A Paddle", "Amarican Pie" crap of today. All teens must see this movie or they will be known as pathetic losers.

BUY THIS MASTERPIECE OR DIE!!!!!

this is one of THE best teen movies, ever! granted, it's an 80's flick, but one of the most worth seeing. My favourite character would have to be Bender (Judd Nelson), i love his sarcasm, his anger, and his all-out obvious perversions on love interest Claire (Molly Ringwald). Watch his eyes; it's all in the eyes.

All in all, it was a really good ensemble of characters and makes profound points about high school hierarchies and how teens relate to their parents (many of those points still applicable today, 2005!). even though the ending was a little predictable, i personally loved this movie and thank Hughes for producing one of the best teen movies i've ever seen.
