| Editorial Reviews:
From Amazon.com One of Ridley Scott's most wrong-headed films, this one (like all of his movies) looks fabulous and sounds utterly ridiculous, almost from the beginning. His first mistake was casting the wonderful Gerard Depardieu as Columbus and forcing him to speak English, which Depardieu does with decided difficulty. After spending way too much time on the ocean with Columbus's three ships (you kind of wish they would sail over the edge of the world), they arrive in the West Indies, only to turn around and sail back. The rest of the film deals with the not particularly comprehensible politics of Columbus's venture, which leads to the violent slaughter of trusting natives by a band of cardboard villains. Depardieu, who radiates sympathy, looks like he's at sea with this material. --Marshall Fine

A must see for those who don't have confidence in their potential September 14, 2007 A "Jake" (Vancouver BC Canada) This one, will not only show the flaws that every average "man" suffers from, but it will overwhelmingly show you what strength of character and the sacrifice of persistent suffering yield. As any R. Scott would do, visually stunning and a delight to the eye. In terms of plot, if you have studied the actual tale, and very fully perceived the film's script, it's bitterly sweet and exhaustively warming and reafirms your faith in man-kind: every single scene counts. Not an awful lot of people know that the investment in this dude produced a 200 MILLION percent return in the 16th century alone. If you "go amidst the noise, haste and confusion" painting your life like a commusant artist, the ending of this epic will make you glow and know that "life has more imagination than you hold in your dreams" and you will rise above. Everything. Because he did. Two factual untruths in it - 3 ships sailing back and tobacco on the 1st voyage. So what! All the important stuff is there though. R Scott at his best, Vagelis at his best, Gerald at his best, for the best biography, of a simple man, you'll ever encounter. Buy yourself the flick: "Get behind the weather."
1492 December 13, 2005 H ROBINSON Loved Depardieu as Columbus, he was perfectly cast for the role. The film was stunning and much underated. Scott's films are among the best cinema has to offer and this film ranks among one of his finest. I love movies and anxiously await the DVD version of 1492.We need more good films and I have no doubt that Ridley Scott will bring them to us . Is Ridley Scott related to Tony Scott who directed Man on Fire another underated film. Denzil Washington was outstanding in the role as the bodyguard.
A tale well told August 29, 2004 When I saw that Ridley Scott directed this film I knew it was going to be visually appealing but I remember the reviews from when this film was released (including Marshall Fine's review above) so I didn't expect much. I was wrong. Despite Gerard Depardieu's challenge with English, he was magnificent and one can understand why Scott had Depardieu pegged for the title role before filming began. The cinemetography is brilliant and the story flows well. There are some dry, slow moving moments in the last 40 minutes but overall the film moves at a good pace. Depardieu did a great job depicting Columbus' character as history tells us: a visionary, an entrepreneur and a callous man. I recommend this film for history buffs and for those who are inspired by men who are driven by his beliefs.
Stunning!! June 19, 2004 joshua gentili (Atlanta, Georgia United States) This movie is incredible! The score by Vangelis is breathtaking. I can't believe this has not been released on dvd. One of Ridley's best!!!!
Realistc or Idealistc Conquest? June 2, 2004 Oscar Suarez (San Bernardino, CA USA) We could clearly see that there were many occurrences that the writers left out in Conquest of Paradise. Here, we see an idealistic version of what occurred after Christopher Columbus discovered the New world. The writers produced a cross-word puzzle that, us, the viewers were able to put together before the climax of the movie developed with intensity. I enjoyed the money greatly, yet I was expecting to se the other side of the Conquest, the horrible side. I wanted the rest of the audience to understand that the results of the conquest was not as pleasant as we have told our children. In Conquest of Paradise Gerard Depadieu is portrayed as a hero, or so we are led to think, yet we don't have a chance to see the other version of the story. I was expecting to see how the indigenous culture basically came to be extinct; how their religion was disregarded and Christianity was implemented. We don't see this in this movie; we only see one side of the dilemma.
